In various plants in Antwerp (Belgium) vast amounts of watervapour are produced by oil fired burners. These burners are fedwith air through a large network of air supply channels, in whichthe flowrate of the air for the different burners is manipulated andcontrolled by different types of valves and louvers. However someburners shut down, when the system setup is changed. Inparticular this happens during the start-up phase of the plant. FlowMotion has therefore been asked to look for the reasons forthis costly malfunction. To get a deeper insight in the fluiddynamical effects within the system velocity and static pressuremeasurements have been performed during the preliminary phaseof the project. The measurement points have been set at fluiddynamical critical positions the channels. With the help of the measurement data flowseparation regions and vortices could have beenfound, which are disadvantageous for the homo-geneity of the air supply for the burners. Tomaximize the accuracy of the investigation of thehidden flow in the air supply network theexperimental data have been validated withanalytical relations and simplified flow simulations(CFD Computational Fluid Dynamics). Only by this combination of analytical, experi-mental and numerical methods sufficient know-ledge could have been obtained to predict thebehaviour of the entire system for various workingsituations, which led to a modification of thecontrol routines for the valves and louvers. Sincethen the number of malfunctions in the watervapour production has been decreased signi-ficantly.Breathless Oil-BurnersFluctuations in the air supply of oil burnersTOTAL / FINA www.total.comexperimental research in thepipeline system
