Minimisation of exhaust air treatment unit size (flow simulation)

Pig farming is an extremely important sector of livestock husbandry. Pigs are among the most sensitive animals in this industry; they respond to draughts or excessive pollutant levels in the stable air with stunted growth and increased susceptibility to disease. Consequently, ventilation and exhaust air purification systems for pigsties require exceptional care. The market is therefore constantly seeking innovative ways to improve its products.

In this project, the objective was to minimise the required size of an exhaust air purification system. The necessary geometric changes had to be implemented without increasing flow resistance, which would otherwise lead to higher fan energy consumption during operation. Another key design goal was ensuring uniform flow through the various filter stages.

To evaluate as many variants as possible—some of which did not yet exist—computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted for all designs. After several hours of processing time, the results were visualised, providing precise data on flow direction, velocities, and pressure distribution.

Following the analysis of the simulation results, it was clearly identified which of the studied variants fulfilled all design goals. As a result, significantly improved performance of the exhaust air purification system was achieved, despite the smaller physical size.
