In an incubator, eggs must be kept within a narrow temperature range while receiving sufficient fresh air. Because many eggs are placed close together, the airflow distribution through the incubator is critical to achieving uniform thermal conditions.
FlowMotion used CFD to analyse the airflow and temperature distribution through the incubator. The model included the geometrically relevant parts of the air-distribution system and the resistance created by the trays and eggs.
The simulations revealed how the supplied air was divided between the different regions and where recirculation or insufficient flow could occur. The local velocity field could then be related to the heat transfer around the eggs.
Different geometric concepts and operating conditions were compared to improve the uniformity of both airflow and temperature. This made it possible to optimise the incubator design before extensive prototype testing.
